Maui in Hawaii's History
The island of Maui, also called the “Valley Isle” is the second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands at 727.2 square miles, and is the third-most populated island in Hawaii, with 144,444 residents in 2010.
The name ‘Maui’ is said to originate from the legend of Hawai’iola, who purportedly discovered the Hawaiian Islands several hundred years before they were colonized in the 18th Century. Legend dictates that Hawai’iola named the island after his son, Maui, who himself was named after the demigod, Māui. Lahaina, Maui’s largest city, known historically as a port city, was Hawaii’s capital until Kamehameha III moved it to Honolulu, Oahu in 1845 when uniting the Hawaiian islands.
